Make a difference in May

Sorry… once again, there will be a complete lack of kink in this post.  For those of you hanging in there, thank you.  Despite the lack of kinky fun, there is an important message to this post and I hope you’ll stick it out.

A few days ago, The Girl posted to her own fabulous blog (which is chock full of kinky fun all the time), that during the month of May she is raising money and awareness for women in need.  Many of us are very lucky to have access to the kinds of resources and services that some women around the world completely lack.  I am one of the lucky ones, but I don’t ever forget those who aren’t.  If you live in the US right now and have turned on the news anytime in the past year you’ve probably heard about the issues we are facing and the decisions we need to make about whether our country was founded on the principle of providing for all of our citizens according to their need.  I hope that this spotlight has made it clear to every citizen of the world that regardless of what our governments do, we as friends and neighbors have a responsibility to help those among us who have the least.

The Girl is doing just that.  This month she is donating $20 up to $500 to The Fistula Foundation for every blogger that links to her blog post.  So here’s my link and my hope that her very generous endeavor is amazingly successful!  There are so many wonderful organizations out there making a difference in the lives of people every day.  The Fistula Foundation is one of them.  If you’re able, consider making a donation yourself.

Want another idea?  How about Kiva.org, an organization which facilitates micro-loans.  You can search through projects seeking funding and make loans of as little as $25.  When borrowers repay your loan you can re-lend the money to another project, or withdraw your contribution and buy yourself a nice treat.  Check here for a list of loans to women, you can also search by project type or location.  What a great gift for the mom who has everything this Mother’s Day.

Thank you thank you thank you for helping spread the word about charities that benefit women. We are so lucky to have the luxury to be as kinky and progressive (or 50’s housewife-ish) as we like to be. It wasn’t always this way for women and it still isn’t this way for so many. It’s good to give back!

Hi Em! I know you’ve been busy–I’ve been missing you at Dev and Poppy’s! This is a wonderful link and a really important topic. Thanks for writing about it.

Girl – I really loved your idea. Thanks for doing it!

Scarlet, I know, I’ve missed everyone too! I wish I could say that things are on the verge of calming down, but we’re heading into our busy season at work, so that would probably be a big huge fib.

I didn’t mention this in my post, but I should also say that being an involved and concerned member of the world isn’t just about sharing financially. And for those of you who can’t be as generous with your wallet, get out and be generous with your time. It means just as much, and sometimes more.

I discovered Kiva a few years ago, Poppy, and I think it’s an amazing and wonderful idea. I am glad someone thought of it!
